Explanation
These Pieces come from Noh Plays which are performed using a flute and
three types of drums.
As Nohkan tunes do not make use of western scales, the ones here are
not the same melody as the originals, and traditional Japanese music
has no chords, these pieces are like a transformation from analog to
digital.
Those of you who are familiar with the original melodies may recognize
the parts of them as you listen.
They express the humour, intellectual play, and enjoyment of spreading
images like the traditional "honkadori" or, disecting and
splicing of poems.
Only those who compose, as well as play and research, can create these
types of works.
Originally, these were composed as piano improvisations. For this recording
however, appropriate instrumental sounds from a cvp 79 keyboard have
been chosen for each piece.
NOs. 1. 4. 11 and 12 were recorded as a lecture concert in Sebelius
Academy, Helsinki, Finland, June 23, '96.
